Converse Inc., the athletic shoe maker based in North Reading, Mass., said yesterday that it would close Apex One Inc., the sports apparel manufacturer that it acquired in May, because of lower-than-expected fall orders. The company added that it expected to record a "significant" write-off for the closure.
